- Enjoy Unemployment Reckoning: According to Pimco's Mohammed El-Erian, policymakers are gravely understating the potential longevity and consequences of double-digit unemployment. Since unemployment is traditionally viewed as a lagging economic indicator -- meaning joblessness may still rise while the economy improves -- most economists have largely ignored the potential impact of a high unemployment rate over the long-term. Mr. El-Erian asserts that rising unemployment will continue to undermine consumption patterns for years to come. The unemployment picture compounds the "negative wealth effect" that has resulted from declining real estate values. Economic policy should therefore factor in >10% unemployment levels for some time to come, a much higher level than is currently being projected.
